We are sad when a tragedy occurs -- such as George Floyd's apparent murder in Minneapolis.
Our natural human reaction is to come up with "solutions to the problem." Generally, people propose more laws, additional training, investigations, etc. These "solutions," though, don't really get at the center of the issue. What IS the center?
Our Hearts Must Change
No amount of laws or training will change our inner spirits. Until our inner beliefs and feelings change, people (including police and other authority figures) will simply find ways around laws or policies, in order to take action based on old beliefs. In short, we must each see another
"There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28)Until we all see one another as brothers or sisters, we will forever have yet another Minneapolis. Laws won't change that. A "change of heart" is the only thing that will change that.
But how are our hearts changed? Our operating environment -- and the voices to which we listen -- determine much of our heart's values. We know that intuitively. It's why we don't want our teenage children hanging around with trouble-makers, for example. We are afraid our kids will be influenced by the voices they hear.
An Environment for Change
Two voices compete for attention in our minds. One is a whisper, while the other is often a shout.- The first (and most important) voice comes from Christ. Repeatedly, Christ urges us to treat one another well. In fact, He even says, "You will prove to others that you are my disciples by the way you treat one another." (paraphrased John 13:35)
- The second (and generally the loudest) voice comes from state and national leadership. These voices can create an "environment" where people are receptive to change, to the kind of growth that leads to transformation of our hearts.
Contrast that message with what Canadian citizens hear (listen here) from their Prime Minister. His message is one of brotherhood and respect for the genuine humanity of each citizen, especially black and brown minority members.
Fruit Falls Close to the Tree
Christ says something really applicable to today's times, in His "Sermon on the Mount." He is speaking to a large crowd of mostly poor, everyday people. He says,"Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit ... Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions."Fruit? What fruit? Paul elaborates in his letter to the church at Galatia:
"The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."In looking at the characteristics of our national leadership, I have searched for evidence of love, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness or self-control. These characteristics (or "fruits") would be present, to one degree or another, in a person led by the Lord.
I have found none -- zero -- of these characteristics to be present in our "leader."
So, we are left with the question: if our "leader" is not led by the Lord, then could his origin be from the opposing force? I'm still chewing on that one. It has profound implications.
